Submerged Queensland Aircraft Wrecks

As a placement with the Queensland Heritage Branch of the Department of Environment and Science (DES), I designed and populate an inventory of sunken aircraft wrecks in Queensland.  The project was conducted over a period of six months and I have commenced updating the Australasian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database (AUCHD) in consultation with DES. The project assessed the significance of the sunken aircraft wrecks in Queensland, identifying which were the most significant, the most likely to be in Queensland waters still. The research identified a potential additional 70 submerged aircraft wrecks in Queensland waters to be added to the Australian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database that currently has 50 wrecks listed.

A summary of the result of the project and report was submitted to DES can be seen in the article titled Understanding the WWII aviation cultural landscape of Queensland and Australia in Issue 44 (2020) of the Australasian Journal of Maritime Archaeology.
